The artwork Resurrection installed in Intiö Chapel
After the renovation of Intiö Chapel was completed, Sampo Kaikkonen’s artwork Resurrection was installed in the chapel’s main hall on October 22, 2025. The painting is a companion piece to Divine Horizon, located in Oulu Cathedral, which Kaikkonen created as a commissioned work in 2020. Both artworks explore the same theme of departure, and similar figures ascending toward the light can be found in each.
Intiö Chapel
The Intiö Chapel and crematorium building was designed by Professor of Architecture Seppo Valjus and his team. Construction began in 1972, and the chapel was consecrated on April 23, 1973. Architecturally, Intiö Chapel represents the later phase of modernism.
In addition to Sampo Kaikkonen’s work, the chapel’s main hall features a bronze relief And You Shall Find by visual artist Laila Pullinen. The altarpiece was unveiled during the 200th anniversary celebration of the Oulu Cemetery on August 21, 1982.
